Sun Country cancels all domestic flights at MSP after Christmas weekend – KARE11.com

The cancellations were due to a “third-party system outage” and impacted dozens of flights the morning after a busy holiday weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS — A “third party system outage” hit Sun Country airlines hard Monday morning, impacting dozens of flights and stranding hundreds of passengers at airports nationwide.

Sun Country’s operations team, which is based at MSP, said around a dozen flights locally were impacted early morning.

As of 11:00 a.m. Sun Country announced only one flight after 8 a.m. was canceled due to an event unrelated to the system outage.

Sun Country is the latest airline to be hit with cancellations and delays in recent weeks. With an industry shortage and the omicron variant of COVID-19 impacting healthcare workers, Delta Airlines and United Airlines canceled thousands of flights around the nation.

The cancellations with Sun Country impacted domestic flights leaving before 8 a.m. CT.

Sun Country, in an email to KARE 11, said “passengers were issued full refunds and waived change fees.”

As of 9:20 a.m. on Monday morning, MSP’s website lists 60 cancelled flights. It’s unknown how many of those were from Sun Country.

Despite the reported outage, Sun Country said it’s working to make sure the rest of its flights take off.

“Currently, our Operations team is executing our approved manual process and working closely with the FAA to clear flights for takeoff,” its emailed statement said. “We feel confident we’ll be able to successfully operate today’s remaining flights.”

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
