Actors Mila Kunis and Ashton Kusher said they would match up to $3 million dollars in donations for refugee and humanitarian aid efforts for displaced Ukranians.
The funds raised are aimed at providing “an immediate impact on refugee and humanitarian aid efforts,” according to their GoFundMe page. More than one million people have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, the U.N. refugee agency says.
Ms. Kunis, who was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, in 1983, said they’re aiming to raise $30 million in relief efforts.
“I came to America in 1991. I have always considered myself an American, a proud American. I love everything that this country has done for myself and my family,” Ms. Kunis said in a video posted to Instagram. “But today I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian.”
“And I’ve never been more proud to be married to a Ukrainian,” Mr. Kutcher said in response.
The funds will be donated to two organizations, according to the Hollywood couple. Donations will go to Flexport.org, an organization that is providing shipments of relief supplies to refugee sites in countries around Ukraine, including Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. Funds will also be donated to Airbnb.org, which is providing free, short-term housing to Ukrainian refugees.
As of Friday evening, the GoFundMe had raised a little more than $9 million.
“The events that have unfolded in Ukraine are devastating. There is no place in this world for this kind of unjust attack on humanity,” Ms. Kunis said, while adding: “The people of Ukraine are strong and brave, but being strong and brave does not mean you’re not worthy of support.”
