GE refrigerators from Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s are being recalled – NJ.com

General Electric (GE) Appliances is recalling six models of refrigerators sold nationwide at retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe’s because they had been causing injuries.

The handles on these free-standing refrigerators’ doors had been detaching, posing a fall risk to anyone trying to pull open the freezer doors.

The Louisville, Kentucky-based manufacturer received 71 reports of the handles falling off the refrigerators. These caused 37 injuries, three of them serious falls, according to a notice published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

About 155,000 of the stainless steel refrigerators with bottom freezers are on the recall list with models selling between $1,900 and $2,500 from Feb. 2020 to Jan. 2022.

The following is a list of affected models:

  • GFE26JYMKFFS
  • GFE26JYMNFFS
  • GNE27EYMKFFS
  • GNE27EYMNFFS
  • GNE27JYMKFFS
  • GNE27JYMNFFS

The serial numbers for the recalled models also begin with the following two letters: DR, FR, GR, HR, LR, MR, RR, SR, TR, VR, ZR, AS, DS, FS, GS, HS, LS or MS.

GE customers with a recalled refrigerator can call the company at 888-345-4671 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or through their website here to replace the freezer’s faulty handle mounting fasteners.

The company announced in a separate notice that people can continue using the refrigerators without the fix by pulling open the edge of the freezer door instead of using the faulty handle.
