The average price of gas in Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and other parts of California has soared to record highs in recent days, according to AAA’s gas prices website. The gasoline price hikes follow an increase in the price of crude oil and higher demand in Europe, The Associated Press reported. In Sacramento, regular unleaded hit its highest recorded average price on Friday at $4.680 a gallon. That was up from $3.181 a year ago. The average price for gas in Stockton hit its record on Saturday at $4.609. Modesto hit its record on Monday at $4.560. AAA spokesperson Sergio Avila said the motoring and travel membership organization has tracked gas prices since 2000. Overall, the current average gas price in California for regular unleaded is $4.625. That’s just a few cents away from a state record, $4.671 on Oct. 9, 2012, Avila said.California’s prices are well above the national average, which stood at $3.422 on Monday. The national record is $4.114 from July 17, 2008. The Golden State also boasts sky-high rates in other counties. Mono County’s average price for regular unleaded on Monday was $5.562 and Alpine County’s $5.499. Rates in the Bay Area are also high. San Rafael, San Francisco and Santa Rosa all had average prices above $4.80. The Central Coast was also setting records, KSBW reported.According to GasBuddy.com, which tracks prices at more than 150,000 gas stations across the country, there could be “small declines” in the price of gas this week across the country due to oil prices briefly falling. “Gas prices will likely fluctuate up and down a few cents weekly, but we do not expect significant drops until the price of crude oil consistently stays under $80 a barrel,” said Avila with AAA.
