Robert Lindner, co-founder of United Dairy Farmers, dies at 101
An important member of the United Dairy Farmers family, Robert Lindner Sr., has died. He was 101.”After a full and amazing life of 101 years, our father and co-founder of United Dairy Farmers, passed on this yesterday. One of his proudest accomplishments was the success of this company. He loved everything about UDF; making and eating ice cream, being in the stores and especially the people who made it all happen,” the Lindner family said in a statement. Lindner Sr.’s father, Carl Lindner Sr. opened the first United Dairy Farmers in 1940. Robert and his siblings started their days at 4 a.m working long hours with their father by running milk routes and delivering eggs and poultry throughout Norwood, Ohio, according to the UDF website.The website states that as word of this little business grew, so did the company. Within a decade, the family-run business had grown to nine locations. As store expansion continued in the early ’80s, Robert took over UDF when Carl Sr. stepped down. Today, Robert’s son Brad runs the business.Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued the following statement Lindner’s death:”Fran and I were saddened to hear of the death of Robert Lindner. He along with his siblings Carl, Dorothy and Richard built United Dairy Farmers (UDF) from a storefront to one of the largest privately held companies in the Cincinnati region. A member of the ‘Greatest Generation,’ Bob served in the Pacific in World War II, and was a steadfast supporter of the USO. In addition, Bob and his wife, Betty, were also generous donors to many Cincinnati-area civic and charitable organizations. Fran and I send our condolences to his family and friend.”
