A man is dead after he was shot early Friday morning while working at a McDonald’s in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Police said they were called to the McDonald’s at 1130 Crain Highway in Gambrills at about 4:45 a.m. Friday for the report of gunshots fired at the restaurant.
Cpl. Chris Anderson with the Anne Arundel County Police Department said 23-year-old Britrain Marcelus Gray of Odenton was one of four employees working in the restaurant when someone started shooting at him, firing several times from outside.
The other three workers “heard the broken glass, the commotion,” and found Gray lying on the floor, Anderson said. “They weren’t witness to it. They had no information for detectives as far as suspect or how or what occurred.”
Anderson added there is no indication Gray was killed by an irate customer upset about something that had just happened, saying the shooter “never entered the store, and never had any sort of interaction with the deceased.”
Still, police said they believe Gray was shot during what appears to be a “targeted incident” and that it was not a random act of violence.
The dining room was closed at the time of the shooting. The crime scene faces several other businesses on both sides of the highway, as well as a busy gas station that sits in the median next to the restaurant.
“We hope that if someone did see or witness something, no matter how small or insignificant they think it might be, if they just want to pass that information along to us,” Anderson said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit at 410-222-4731.
“We are saddened by the senseless and tragic loss of our friend and colleague,” the McDonald’s corporate office said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the employee’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. We are in the process of offering our employees counseling and another support they may need and working with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.”
